Pakenham turns one, grocer gift & Anti-Poverty Week

Our Pakenham Market Turned One!

This week, we’re celebrating Pakenham’s first birthday at the new location at Outlook Community Centre! Thanks to funding from VicHealth and our ongoing partnership with Cardinia Shire Council and Cardinia Food Movement, we reopened our Pakenham Market last year during Anti-Poverty Week. Since reopening, we have served over 1,850 customers at our market and an additional 210 through online Box Orders. Check out some of the photos of our celebration below or head to our social media pages for more.

Anti-Poverty Week

17th to the 23rd of October marks this year’s Anti-Poverty Week.

COVID-19 restrictions over the last two years have seen a significant impact on people being able to access food throughout Australia. Australian Council of Social Service published in a recent report that 96% of those who completed their Living in Lockdown survey were seriously struggling with the cost of living and that 41.5% were at risk of homelessness. The Foodbank Hunger Report 2021 stated that over one-third of Australians experiencing food insecurity had never experienced it before the pandemic. Additionally, 57% of severely food insecure Australians were going a whole day without eating, at least once a week. Unfortunately, we know that those with low-to-no income will often skip meals in order to afford paying things like rent and bills.

At The Community Grocer we are in strong support of Australian Council of Social Service call to Raise the Rate this Anti-Poverty Week, to ensure that people no longer have to choose between buying food and paying rent and bills. At TCG we work hard to determine where we open our markets based on rigorous needs-based assessments of the community. We then seek out potential market locations that present a balance of providing the things that we need for our markets to function, while also providing ease of access for the community, to ensure that those who are most in need of affordable fruit and vegetables are able to access them.

With our focus on purpose not profit we are able to supply fruit and vegetables to our community that are on average 30% more affordable than those at other retailers in the areas where our markets operate. This allows our community members to access affordable, high-quality, culturally appropriate fruit and vegetables in a dignified way. Providing our community members with a choice in what they take home to feed themselves and their families.

Whether you shop for high-quality Australian produce, for affordability, to avoid crowds and shop at an outdoor market, or to support our mission for fair food access to our communities, everyone is welcome at our markets!

Grocer Gift Comes to Pakenham

We believe that there needs to be an appropriate, dignified and sustainable approach to addressing food insecurity in Australia. Throughout the pandemic, we have witnessed firsthand the need for improved access to high-quality fruit and vegetables, particularly for those accessing emergency food relief. Our pre-existing paper-based voucher program, in partnership with a local community health organisation, Cohealth, saw over a fourfold increase in use during the pandemic.

We’d like to take this opportunity to officially announce the roll-out of the Grocer Gift Community Partnership Program to Pakenham and Cardinia.
Grocer Gift is our innovative new web platform that generates QR-coded vouchers - what we call Grocer Gift Cards. We work with Community Partners who are responsible for distributing these Grocer Gift Cards to their community members based on their needs. Grocer Gift Cards can be purchased by anyone so it’s a dignified process for recipients.

In addition, using Grocer Gift Cards allows recipients to choose their produce in a marketplace setting, ensuring the food they take home with them is familiar, culturally appropriate, and can be prepared or cooked using their available resources, knowledge and skills.

There are many underlying factors contributing to food insecurity and many of these impact on other areas of life. Working with us in distributing Grocer Gift Cards, Community Partners are able to provide more than food relief, and we know recipients of the Grocer Gift Cards are receiving wrap around support. This leaves both us and our Community Partners to do what we do best.

Our Grocer Gift Community Partnership Program was first launched at our Fitzroy and Carlton Markets in January 2021 to address the overwhelming need for a sustainable and dignified way to access nutritious food for people experiencing disadvantage.
We are so pleased with how this program has now been taken up at our Pakenham Market, and this is all thanks to our partners.

WINDERMERE PILOT

SNACK.JPG

We’ve collaborated with Windermere as our first Community Partner in distributing Grocer Gift Cards as the pilot of our roll-out of the program in Cardinia. Working closely with Windermere to understand the unique challenges their community faces in accessing fresh produce Grocer Gift Program has also hit the road. We have been delivering a selection of Mixed Boxes to Cardinia residents who may be unable to attend our markets. So far we have seen a great response to the program and some fantastic feedback from our Grocer Gift customers, both those who have shopped at our market with their Grocer Gift Card and those that have received a delivery.

OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH MONASH UNIVERSITY

We are so fortunate to have a strong connection with Monash University who were recently researching the views and experiences of accessing food for those living in Cardinia Shire. All participants of this study received a Grocer Gift Card to be redeemed at our Pakenham Market. This survey will play a vital role in reimagining a food secure future in Cardinia Shire.

Grocer Gift in the future

We have worked hard over the last 12 months to bring the Grocer Gift Community Partnership Program to all of our markets to ensure more people in our community have access to fresh, high quality, culturally appropriate foods. However, our innovative Grocer Gift web platform also allows us to generate Grocer Gift Cards for the general public, just like a regular gift card. We are excited to announce that in the next few months we will have the option for our customers to purchase our Grocer Gift Cards through Open Food Network. These Grocer Gift Cards will be valid at all of our markets and allow people to purchase on average 30% more fresh fruit and vegetables than they would using a gift card for the same price at other major retailers. When you purchase a Grocer Gift Card for a friend, family member, colleague, or neighbour not only are you gifting that person the gift of fruit and veggies, but you also support food security in our community, and support our mission at TCG.
Keep an eye out for when this will be available!

Fair food Week, National Nutrition week & World food Day

Fair Food Week runs from the October 9th-17th and is a celebration of all the farmers, gardeners, chefs, and community-based food enterprises that work hard to ensure all people living in Australia have access to fresh, local, and affordable produce. National Nutrition Week runs from October 10-17th to raise awareness about the role food plays in our health. World Food Day then kicks off on October 16th with this year’s theme: “Our Actions are our Future- Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life”

We have a lot to celebrate this year at The Community Grocer, as while the last two years have been incredibly difficult, our 2021 Impact Evaluation conducted by students at Monash University found that 61% of our customers increased their consumption of fruit and vegetables by shopping at TCG. We are also proud that we have been able to keep most of our markets running throughout lockdown restrictions by implementing increased safety measures and relocating some of our markets when necessary. Most importantly, we have continued to receive amazing feedback from those who shop with us! This is only made possible with the support of so many people and organisations!

Our Fresh Produce Suppliers

Our 2021 Impact Evaluation also found that 81% of customers rated our produce as Excellent Quality! Piccolo Fresh has been our main supplier since we opened our first market in 2014. Piccolo Fresh’s focus on Australian grown produce means the seasonal produce sold at our markets is super fresh! We have loved having Piccolo Fresh supply us with high-quality, fresh produce as this means that when our supporters shop with us, not only are they supporting the right to food, but they are also supporting Australian Farmers and their communities.

Over the last year, we’ve also been able to work with Moving Feast and Melbourne Farmers’ Markets to source some additional local and organic produce for our markets as well as the boxes we prepared for the housing estates in lockdown last year.

Our Market teams

We are so lucky to see to many friendly customers each week, and even more lucky that so many of our customers are happy to have a quick chat about their favourite foods and what they are planning to cook for the week. So this Fair Food Week, we thought it was about time we returned the favour, and shared with everyone our favourite foods and how we like to eat them. Check out some of our Market Faces and Faves below and stay tuned on our social media pages for more during this week!

These are also the faces of our amazing volunteers, without whom, our markets would not be possible. Our volunteers are up early with our Market Managers every market morning to get everything ready for our wonderful customers. So this week we also wanted to take the time to thank our volunteers for making the our markets run smoothly, and also make them a really fun place to work! If you’d like to express an interest in volunteering with us, head to Get Involved.

Our Supporters

The last year has not been easy for anyone and we are so thankful for all our loyal customers who have continued to shop with us when able, both at Our Markets and with online Box Orders! We are also thankful to those who support us by following us online, sharing our posts and making donations. All your support, in any shape or form, allows us to continue to ensure our communities have access to fresh, high-quality, affordable, and culturally appropriate fruit and vegetables! We have be blown away by the positive feedback that we have received in last 18 months, particularly given what has been thrown at us. We are so proud to have been able to continue providing our service to our communities throughout all the twists and turns of this time. Check out some of the feedback we have received below! Or stay tuned on our social media pages for more this week.

We are so proud of what we have been able to achieve in the last two years and there are so many people and organisations who made it all possible. Thank you again to everyone who makes The Community Grocer thrive, all your support, in any form, means a greater impact in our community!

Meet Janine!

We are so grateful to have had Janine join our team as a Board Advisor in January of this year. In this post we learn more about Janine by asking her a few questions about her work, how she came to join our team through the Westpac Board Observership Program, and in true TCG nature, a bit about her favourite foods. If you would like to learn more about the other amazing members of our Board, head to our Board Members page.

What is it about The Community Grocer that made you want to join the team?

It is really important for my engagement to be passionate about what I am doing. The Community Grocer absolutely ticked all the boxes for me. It is a tremendous organisation with great impact, proven by world class research that is really making a difference and I see great potential regarding expansion and future impact. The basic need for accessibility to healthy and affordable food and the community connectivity it brings is so simple and yet so important and powerful and the team are amazing!

You have a very impressive background - how do you imagine you will contribute to TCG’s strategy?

I am a Chartered Accountant by trade and have broad experience across large Financial Services organisations. In terms of application to The Community Grocer, I bring strong experience across finance, risk, governance and delivery which is important in a growing organisation such as TCG. Through this experience, I feel that I can contribute to the sustainability of TCG which is a key strategic pillar and in particular helping to establish and mature the Governance, Risk & Finance Sub-Committee as a key sub-committee to support the Board.

Can you tell us a little more about the Westpac Board Observership Program?

The Board Observership Program is a Westpac Foundaton run program in partnership with Minter Ellison. It is a 12 month program that aims to provide talent, new skills and fresh perspectives into not for profit organisations with participants attending Board meetings in an observer / advisor capacity. For me, I was keen to do more than observe and it has been great that the Board have adopted me in and treat me absolutely as an equal (albeit without voting rights!)

What is your favourite dish?

That is a hard one, as I love so many dishes. I always say however that if there was just one dish that I had to eat at every meal for the rest of my life it would have to be Nasi Goreng (with extra chilli, a stick or two of chicken satay and of course a fried egg on top!) It is such a simple yet tasty dish that works for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

What is something you ate a lot growing up?

I grew up in Yorkshire in the UK and my Grandad was a butcher. I have very fond memories of eating his award winning pork pies that were made with love. Also my Mum’s Sunday roast beef and of course Yorkshire pudding.

What is your go-to recipe?

I always have lots of fresh veggies in the house which I love to roast. So easy and versatile to have with pasta, salad, protein, frittata and is my go to foundation for many meals.

Is there a food you love that other people find a little odd?

I love BBQ’d prawns. Nothing too unusual about that I guess, however I especially love eating the crispy bits (including the head, legs and tail) which completely freaks my husband out! I do the same with crispy fried chicken wings, often there is not much left on my plate apart from the non-crispy bones when I am done. Finger licking good I say!

We know those in the hospitality sector are having an incredibly difficult time; when things open back up, what local eatery do you recommend everyone try, and why?

I am based in Sydney and my favourite place to hang-out is a tiny Boho type café / bar called the Belgrave Cartel in Manly. Nothing flash but it’s one of those great little places where none of the furniture matches and is great anytime, be it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks or drinks (I go a lot!) The owners are of Italian Heritage and have poured blood sweat and tears into this place. They have rooftop bees making Belgrave Cartel Honey and the best meatballs with Nonna’s tomato sauce!

COVID has been a huge challenge for everyone - what have you done to keep positive when things are really tough?

For me, exercise is the key ingredient for mental wellbeing. I love to run and run most days when I can, preferably with my dog @bommiethevizsla

TCG is all about people so it is great to share the stories of some of our team! Keep an eye for more in the future, and in the meantime check out Janine's dog's antics at @bommiethevizsla.

When Life Hands You Lemons

Life has been handing out lemons left, right and centre for the last 18 months, and we’ve all been doing our best to make the most of it. And now we’re here with more, but the good kind!

IMG_2271.jpg

We have teamed up with YUME, Melbourne Farmers Market and Moving Feast and secured a whole bunch of lemons for only $1.40 per kg!!

As a result of the disastrous storms that hit Southern Victoria in June, many farmers experienced significant damage to their crops. That’s exactly what happened to Joe, a 4th generation farmer in the Yarra Valley, who was forced to salvage as many lemons as possible from his damaged young lemon trees. Melbourne Farmers Market heard of this situation through YUME and jumped at the opportunity to rescue the lemons which otherwise would have been destined for landfill.

You can add lemons to your box order on Open Food Network by following the link for your market

Twelve Months with The Community Grocer 20/21

Hi everyone, I’m Madie, the new Communications Coordinator for The Community Grocer. I have the difficult task of replacing Isabella who has done an outstanding job of keeping you up-to-date with all our goings on over the last eighteen months and managing to spread cheer throughout our online community, but I will do my best!

As the financial year drew to a close we have been reflecting on the last twelve months here at The Community Grocer. This also marks the same amount of time I have been with TCG so it seemed fitting I take you through what we have been up to.

1000 Fruit & Vegetable Boxes to People Living in Locked-Down Public Housing Estates

I began volunteering at the Fitzroy market in the middle of July, an exceptionally difficult time for many Victorians. I was fortunate enough to begin my volunteering with Tess, our General Manager, who has a wealth of information on all things food justice related.

Just as we ticked over into July, Coronavirus had started to take hold again after we’d slowly made our way out of lockdown. At the time I began I heard from Tess that The Community Grocer were able to prepare, pack and deliver 1000 boxes of fresh, nutritious and culturally appropriate fresh produce to residents of public housing estates in Flemington, Kensington and North Melbourne that had been locked down. Considering we previously had a market on the Flemington Housing Estate this was particularly close to home for TCG and we were so glad we were able to ensure residents had access to high quality fresh produce. You can read the whole story here.

The year 2020 was all about adapting to the twists and turns COVID-19 threw our way, and by getting all our markets up and running on Open Food Network we were able to provide the option for contactless pickup to our customers. This allowed us to keep our community safe while still giving people the option to purchase one-off boxes or subscriptions for a variety of mixed fruit and/or vegetable boxes. For more information on how to order through Open Food Network, click this link.

Partnering with Fawkner Commons and Inner North Foundation

After having to close our Fawkner market due to complications associated with COVID-19 we were fortunate enough to partner with Fawkner Commons for the second half of 2020. During this time 1453 boxes and over 1000 cartons of eggs were distributed from the Fawkner adapted market. This included 243 boxes that were provided free of charge to people experiencing food insecurity with help from additional funding from Inner North Foundation.

We reopened our Carlton Market in October 2020 after being forced to close for two months as our space was being used for COVID-19 testing. Being our flagship market for so many years, it was hard to know that our loyal customers were unable to attend our markets, and difficult to see how much of an impact closing had. Thankfully, we are now seeing more and more friendly, familiar faces return to our Carlton Market each week. While there may still be the unfortunate case of having to suspend our markets for a week here or there in order to keep our staff, customers and community safe, we are very thankful to be an essential service that is able to operate weekly, even during lockdown. We were featured in Assemble Papers about just that, earlier this year.

Pakenham market relaunched

I began volunteering at our Heidelberg West market in August with our Market Manager and qualified dietitian Nadhirah. It was in October that I heard the good news that through our ongoing partnership with VicHealth we were able to reopen our Pakenham market at our new site Outlook Community Centre Pakenham. Nadhirah then also became the interim Market Manager at Pakenham while the market was getting back up and running. You can hear all about the reopening of Pakenham in our interview with ABC.

With the help of additional funding from Moving Feast, we were able to provide 200 boxes free of charge to seven food relief agencies in December. We are so thankful to have been able to do this at a time of year when economic barriers to fresh fruit and vegetables can be such an issue.

Grocer Gift Funding and Pilot

In January of 2021 we were lucky enough to secure a grant from the Victorian Government as part of the Community Food Relief Fund to further develop our innovative new voucher program, the Grocer Gift Program. Our program was used as the example of the types of projects that were funded and Luke Donnellan MP announced the recipients of the grants  at our Fitzroy Market in January.

After developing the web platform, consulting the community to design the branding, and working with our community partners to guide the processes, we began piloting the program with our existing partners cohealth at our Fitzroy and Carlton markets. Moving Feast provided the initial seed funding and the City of Melbourne have also contributed to the project.

The Community Grocer’s Rebrand - A Fresh New Look

It was in February that I was fortunate enough to come onboard as the new Market Manager for the Pakenham Market. The things I had learnt during my time volunteering; from displaying our fresh fruit and vegetables, to packing box orders, and conducting price comparisons, have been truly invaluable in my role as Market Manager. This was also an exciting time for The Community Grocer as a whole as we began to go through a rebrand. This rebrand includes updated logos and a fresh look to signify a new era for The Community Grocer.

Monash University Partnership - Student placements

Each year we are lucky enough to have students studying their Master of Dietetics at Monash University conduct a set of yearly evaluations. The results of this year’s Impact Evaluation can be found here. We were so glad to see that 86% of our customers still feel more connected to the community because of our markets, even after this difficult year of distancing.

We are so happy with how much we were able to achieve in the last financial year, given all the obstacles that were thrown everyone’s way. We are looking forward to another year of serving fresh, high quality, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods to our customers, and helping to build healthy, connected communities.
